JOHN SHAW, sculptor and letter carver was commissioned to produce the memorial. He is a graduate of Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and has been involved in design and lettering since 1971. He has previously been commissioned by Andrew Mather to produce two war memorials for St Wilfrid's church in Preston. So we are very confident that the memorial has been placed in the best hands of a trusted and very gifted artist who we know will give the Memorial the greatest consideration, due care and attention to detail that a work of this importance and significance deserves.
Work began on the project in 2011. John visited the proposed site on the Railway Station and took all the necessary measurements so that he could place an order at the quarry for the right piece of slate. It had to be done well in advance, as you cannot predict when they can quarry a piece that is of the right size and depth and flawless. Not any old piece of slate will do! One of the Trustees is a Heraldic artist and has produced new artwork for the Regimental badge and the butterfly for the division motif of 'D' company.
The finished Memorial showing the carved lettering and the Regimental badge both finished in enamel paint and gold leaf.
